it's totally dependant upon the specification of the car. The fastest RC car ever recorded was powered by an electric motor, however it's the general misconception that nitro powered cars are faster.
If you're in the situation where you're racing a standard spec electric car with the standard factory fit electrics then the standard spec nitro car is likely to be quicker.
However, go and google Mamba Max brushless motor / controller sets and anything short of a full race spec nitro is unlikely to get anywhere near it.
It's also down to the size of the engine used, much in the same way as a Viper is much quicker than a Prius because of it's significantly larger engine, but the Prius would likely wipe the floor with a 1 litre rust bucket.
Equally, electric motors generate all of their torque from the very beginning (it's the torque that accelerates the car, not the BHP) whereas nitro engines need to get up to speed befiore developing their torque.
If you're wanting to race you don't need a fast car, find a circuit and learn it. Lewis Hamilton could drive my car a hell of a lot faster than I could drive his. Being quick around a circuit isn't about going fast, it's about being smooth, there's a chance that a nitro car would feel overpowered to a beginner in a close racing situation and you'd spend more time spinning the wheels than actually getting anywhere.
