How to tell if a wall is load bearing in your house?
First, if in doubt, assume the wall is load and act accordingly. If the house is of post beam construction and therefore can not be many or load bearing walls. In general, you can see the structure of the house in the attic, basement and on each floor and the following questions: Is there a significant burden above, as built (multi-board) conducting road or on another wall? Is there a floor track above it, or simply an empty attic? If you can see the beams in the attic wall is parallel or perpendicular to them? Generally, load-bearing walls are perpendicular to the load-bearing beams. If two floor joists or ceiling joists intersect separated over a wall, the wall should be considered load bearing. Is it an outside wall? You should consider all through out the walls. If the house has been remodeled, an exterior wall before now could be an inside wall. Review the basis to find these "Stealth" outside the walls. Look at the beams and posts in the basement. In multi-floor houses, posts and beams in the basement walls above indicate of them, even up to two stories. Note that several such floor load bearing walls can not be directly above one another. In the complex, large houses, the basement can be a jungle of carrying beams and poles, crossed and intertwined. It requires careful inspection to determine how this maze of beams supporting the house, and its effect on the walls above.
