Have you heard this wild one about the late Steve McQueen?
As far back as middle school, and especially after i joined the Marines in the late 70s I’ve heard this story about Steve McQueen, the late, great movie star, and how he got himself thrown out of the Corps.
They say he stole an Amphibious tractor (some versions say it was a tank) painted it pink, and drove it down the main drag of Oceanside Ca. outside of Camp Pendleton.
I always got a kick out of this, because McQueen was, and still is one of my favorite actors. Later, on reading several biographies on him, I learned that his three year stint in the Marine Corps, while checkered, did not end like that. He was repeatably brought up on charges for going over the hill, and was busted from PFC to PVT several times. But he never pulled a stunt like this at Pendleton or any other base. In fact, the whole time he was in, he was at Camp Lejuene NC.
I wonder if this story is still being told in the ranks of the Corps and it’s hell raisers?
i lived in a San Diego Ocean Side same, When that happened but it wasnt painted pink.Unless it happened twice. Wait a minet that was mesa colege area.
